Design Highlight: Haven

Each Latitude 37 home is a bespoke response to the wants and needs of our clients and the demands of the site’s surrounding landscape. Newly completed Haven, located in Mount Eliza’s picturesque ‘Golden Mile,’ is a contemporary coastal residence that luxuriously embodies the natural beauty of the seaside suburb.

We recently sat down with Steve Wyatt from Latitude 37’s Design Team, to take a closer look at the unparalleled design elements that have been incorporated by the team into this wonderful home.

“The concept for Haven builds upon the design philosophy of the nearby Ranelagh Estate, an exclusive estate of holiday houses by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin. These homes were designed to complement the natural beauty of the hilly terrain nestled between coast and bushland with a focus on connecting the homes to the surrounding landscape, which we also sought to accomplish with Haven,” said Steve.

The single-storey, split-level residence nestles in and steps naturally down the hillside, providing pockets of space both inside and out. Architecturally, the home takes a simple yet elevated form, with double-pitched roofs that play on the typical child’s drawing of a house and nod to classic Australian shed vernacular.

“The simplicity of the architectural form allows the design to concentrate on a more detailed approach creating a sense of relaxed spaciousness.”

The home’s interconnected floorplan has been designed around the central courtyard that seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a striking focal point that provides access to natural light, intimate privacy from outside and protection from the elements all year round.

Haven comprises four bedrooms, zoned living areas, an open-plan kitchen and dining space with an adjoining butler’s pantry, as well as a separate study room. Meticulous backyard landscaping, an undercover alfresco area and a generous pool complete the residence and offer residents an unparalleled living experience.

The home is sited on approximately 1,500 square metres of prime beachside land, boasting a magnificent private treed outlook with barely another home in sight.

When designing Haven’s refined interiors, Latitude 37’s award-winning designers painstakingly considered space, light, colour, texture, sustainable practices, and material selections, resulting in a sophisticated aesthetic that perfectly balances luxury and functionality.

“We embraced dark moody colours with splashes of natural timber and stone that recede into and reflect the surrounding landscape. By using simple and familiar materials, we hope the interiors can act as a canvas for intricate details and personal touches by the eventual residents.”

“Each room has its own identity, a unique volume and a different way of caching light and connecting to the outdoors via views of the sky and the stars. We used large unique windows to create the illusion of the surrounding nature as framed artwork,” concluded Steve.
